A handy guide to our HETAS-approved chimney sweeping service

You don’t have to do much to prepare for your chimney to be swept! But there are a few things you could do to make our job a little easier and ensure any valuables are free from soot. Read our comprehensive guide to the chimney sweeping process!

Chimney sweeping in the
21st century isn’t quite like the olden days!

So don’t expect Oliver Twist to turn up with brush in hand, ready to be lowered down your chimney!

Your chimney sweep will lay a heavy-duty tarpaulin sheet in front of your fireplace and use specially manufactured sweep’s soot cloths to shield the fireplace and retain the soot behind. We will be using state-of-the-art equipment designed specifically for the job in hand and all our sweeps carry a vast variety of power cleaners, brushes, rods and scrapers to deal with all sizes of chimney flues and blockages.

If you have any questions, worries or concerns, please don’t hesitate to contact us.

How to prepare for your chimney sweep:

  • Please make sure the appliance is off and cold

  • Remove all items from the mantel piece and hearth area

  • Remove any unburnt fuel

  • Cover soft furnishings and electronic equipment

  • Remove valuable items from the room

  • If concerned, please lay newspaper or old sheets from the door to the fireplace for the sweeps to walk on (especially in wet weather)

  • …and if you see the brush emerge from your chimney pot, don’t forget to make a wish!

Booking your HETAS-approved chimney clean is easy

If you have moved into a new home and are not sure when the chimneys were last swept, we will be happy to carry out a full inspection and survey. Milborrow Chimney Sweeps also stock a comprehensive range of pots, bird guards, cowls and specialist chimney caps which your sweep will be happy to install for you. Let our experienced team know what you would like us to do and leave the rest to us.

A chimney stack, pot and any cowls should be able to withstand a chimney sweeping. If for any reason a pot / cowl breaks or becomes dislodged during this process, the sweep cannot take any responsibility.

However, in the unlikely event of an accident, Milborrow Chimney Sweeps will endeavour to replace and repair at a reduced charge to the homeowner.
